 If you ask 10 veteran players if they like their careers, I bet most would say yes. Pay, power, perks -- what's not to like, right? Not exactly.

But if they said there wasn't a downside, they'd be lying. The truth is you can't have everything in life and everything worth having has a price. Significant gains, personal or professional, require sacrifice. And professional baseball is no different.

Being a professional baseball player is like a rollercoaster ride: hyper fast-paced, ups and downs, screams and laughs.

Why should this matter to you? Well, if you’re embarking on a career in professional baseball, it’s good to know these things in advance. If you’re in the middle of your career, it’s nice to know you’re not alone. And if you’re towards the end of your career, it’s refreshing to consider the things you won’t be missing.

Politics and hidden agendas. Baseball is a remarkably satisfying career. Yet on the other hand, you probably despise the politics and business games people play, not to mention all the hidden personal agendas and passive aggressive behaviors. Most of those people self-destruct sooner or later.

Tyrannical control freaks. You may come to think that you’re a magnet for dysfunctional, lunatic managers or coaches; but keep in mind, this too shall pass. Just know they’re out there and your paths will cross.

The PTSD-like stress. You’ve probably never been in actual combat, but there are some similarities with dictator-like owners, GMs, crazy sponsor factions, and sniper teammates ready to shoot you in the back the minute you turn around.

Living out of a suitcase.  You get used to waking up in hotel rooms in the middle of the night with no idea where you are. At some point, you’ll never want to get on a plane again.

Not having a life. Manage your time better--easy to talk about; hard to pull off. Most of the time you’re either traveling to or from a game, preparing for the game, playing the game, or in a meeting about the game, And when you are home you’ll be thinking about the game.

Trades. Comes with the territory, and may benefit the team in the long run, but never easy for anyone.

If you're an up-and-comer with hopes of climbing the professional ladder all the way to the top, then I'm sure this won't deter you, and it shouldn't. Hope you like rollercoasters, make sure you get a seat by a mentor, and enjoy the ride.

Si le preguntas a 10 jugadores veteranos, si les gusta su carrera, apuesto que la mayoría diría que sí. Pago, el poder, los beneficios - lo que no gusta, ¿verdad? No exactamente.
Pero si dijo que no era un inconveniente, que estaría mintiendo. La verdad es que no se puede tener todo en la vida y todo lo que vale la pena haber tiene un precio. Los avances significativos, personal o profesional, requiere sacrificio. Y el béisbol profesional no es diferente.
Ser un jugador profesional de béisbol es como una montaña rusa: hiper rápidos, altos y bajos, gritos y risas.
¿Por qué es importante para ti? Bueno, si usted se está embarcando en una carrera en el béisbol profesional, es bueno saber estas cosas por adelantado. Si estás en la mitad de su carrera, es bueno saber que usted no está solo. Y si usted es hacia el final de su carrera, es refrescante tener en cuenta las cosas que usted no va a faltar.
La política y las agendas ocultas. El béisbol es una carrera muy satisfactoria. Sin embargo, por el contrario, es probable que desprecian la política y los negocios juegan juegos que la gente, por no hablar de todas las agendas ocultas de carácter personal y pasivos conductas agresivas. La mayoría de las personas auto-destrucción, tarde o temprano.
Monstruos tiránicos de control. Usted puede llegar a pensar que eres un imán para los gerentes disfuncionales, locos o entrenadores, pero tenga en cuenta que esto también pasará. Sólo sé que están ahí fuera, y sus caminos se cruzan será.
El trastorno de estrés postraumático, como el estrés. Si usted es un up-and-esquina con la esperanza de ascender en la escala profesional de todo el camino hasta la cima, entonces estoy seguro de que esto no le impida, y no debería. Espero que les guste la montaña rusa, asegúrese de obtener un asiento por un mentor, y disfruta del viaje.
